DESCRIPTION OF ARTWORK:

'Returning' along with it's sister piece 'Wanderer' were both inspired by the opening chapters of John Steinbeck's 1939 novel 'The Grapes Of Wrath', in which we follow the return journey home of the story's main protagonist, Tom Joad, as he walks across the vast open land of Oklahoma. DESCRIPTION OF ARTWORK:

In 2016 I decided to introduce bright, flat colour to my painting after a couple of years of working mainly in black and white.

'Wanderer' along with it's sister piece 'Returning' were both inspired by the opening chapters of John Steinbeck's 1939 novel 'The Grapes Of Wrath', in which we follow the return journey home of the story's main protagonist, Tom Joad, as he walks across the vast open land of Oklahoma. The author brilliantly draws a vivid picture with words of the continually changing landscape.

I love painting skies, and with 'Wanderer' and 'Returning' I chose specific limited colour palettes merged with black to create the vibrant and exaggerated skies. I've mentioned my inspiration for creating the piece, but the story... well, the story is down to you.

LOT NO.4

Title: A Dark Place

Medium: ink on handmade cotton paper

Size: 30cm x 30cm

unframed

UK delivery (included)

STARTING BID:

DESCRIPTION OF ARTWORK:

This original hand drawn ink on paper was one of only a handful of such pieces that I have created to date. A far cry from painting and pastel work where I use brushes and my fingers respectively, whilst almost always standing. These small original works were created at my desk while seated. Making the short marks with ink pen on the thick, textured surface of the Indian recycled cotton rag is a little labourious, while at the same time rather relaxing.

Due to it's process along with size and materials used, the ink on paper artworks seem to me to create an especially intimate feel. The finished look resembles that of an etching print, however, this is most certainly a complete one off.

Title: Tales From Nowhere - The Weight Of Shadows - Painting No.8

Size: 61cm x 122cm

STARTING BID:

DESCRIPTION OF ARTWORK:

I've always been very fond of this piece from my Tales From Nowhere series of 2013. I realise that I don't exhibit my work often enough and the huge downside to this is the work not being seen in the flesh by nearly enough eyes! To physically stand in front of an original painting is so important and it's the only way to really appreciate an original artwork... That's the real tester!

Tales From Nowhere - The Weight Of Shadows - Painting No.8 was the eighth in the series of 10 paintings that dealt with the nowhere man's journey of discovery as he/she travels across various landscapes to then be pulled by the draw of the metropolis. The hopes, dreams, anxiety and excitement of arriving in the big city. In Painting No.8 we find our protagonist alone among the huge buildings and streets of this new, unknown place...

Partly inspired by my time as a scenic artist apprentice in the film industry, I remember painting the backdrop of Babylon for the Oliver Stone film 'Alexander' and after spending 6 weeks on one view of the city with its huge ziggurats, my boss (scenic artist Steve Mitchell) added these tiny silhouette figures, and I mean tiny! It suddenly put everything into perspective and showed the sheer scale of these buildings. It blew my mind, especially to know that Babylon really existed.

So, this piece is certainly a nod to my time on that film.
